I recently listened to my local radio talk show host doing his afternoon program. On this particular day, his topic was about my state of Tennessee considering Constitutional Carry (firearm carry for everyone, no permit required).  He is one of those conservatives who claims to support our issues but tends to lean to the left quite frequently.

During this episode, he kept mentioning “well-regulated”, declaring that the term meant “regulated well”. He obviously did not know that within the parlance of the time, during the writing of the Constitution, “well-regulated” meant “well-trained”.

I have never understood how wrong many people are when it comes to understanding the intent of our Second Amendment right. The language is the most unambiguous of the Bill of Rights. “Of the people” and “shall not be infringed” are clearly and definitively stated. The anti-gun crowd tries to spread confusion and ambiguity by clinging to the amendment’s preamble, which has zero effect on the rest of the statement. Don’t believe me? Here is my favorite sentence to prove the attempt to distract:

“A well-balanced breakfast, being necessary to the start of a healthy day, the right of the people to make and eat food, shall not be infringed.”

Who has a right to the food? Using the liberal logic that firearms only belong to the National Guard (they think that is what a militia is), only breakfast has a right to food.

It has also occurred to me that many Democrat politicians and pundits are constantly declaring that something is a right and, because it is such, the government should fund it. If liberals continuously spend money on imagined and undeclared rights, such as healthcare, housing, abortion, cell phones, etc., shouldn’t our Constitutionally stated and protected rights be funded also? When the left tries to focus on the lack of training or ability of gun owners as an attack on the right to keep and bear arms, shouldn’t the government provide training for anyone who wants to own a gun? And since a firearm is required to practice our Second Amendment, and not all Americans own one, shouldn’t the government actually provide firearms to all adult US citizens? Obviously, I am being tongue-in-cheek, but I am also making a valid point about both government waste and misappropriation, as well as “imagined rights” not even referenced in the U.S. Constitution.

Our Second Amendment right is under ever increasing scrutiny and attack by leftists, especially the media. Make no mistake, the Biden administration is a new boost in the arm for these freedom-hating, socialist wannabes. New attacks, restrictive laws and executive orders are looming. It is up to us everyday Americans to understand this right and not get distracted by the intentionally misleading and confusing argument. As Americans we have the right to own firearms, for the protection of ourselves, our loved ones, our neighbors and, ultimately, our country. We truly are the referenced “militia”.

As with any exercise, if we fail to practice, we lose our ability.

If we stop exercising our Second Amendment right, we will lose our ability to use it, and ultimately protect it.
